The Kikuyus of Kenya say “treat the earth well. It was not given to you by your parents, it is loaned to you by your children.” There are many of such sayings in African cultures.
The quote reminds us as human beings to protect the environment for future generations. We are but temporary custodians of the planet and not its owners.
But of late the major causes of global environmental degradation stem from both human and natural events. In Africa, the major contributors to environmental problems include deforestation, unsustainable agricultural practices, pollution and climate change.

As Hill House Quaker Meeting celebrates its centenary, may we reflect on our commitment to sustainability and stewardship. These are in Quaker testimonies and values deeply rooted in both African traditions and Christian teachings. And as our planet faces unprecedented challenges: climate change, environmental degradation, and social inequality, it is time for us to act.
In African cultures, the concept of “ubuntu” (humanity towards others) emphasizes interconnectedness and responsibility towards our communities and the environment. Similarly, biblical teachings encourage us to be good stewards of God’s creation (Genesis 1:28, Psalm 24:1). These principles should guide our actions towards a more sustainable future.

Our Commitment
At Hill House, we are launching community projects with the conviction of sharing with our neighbours and community. Our action sprang out of concerns members expressed during discussion on environment, sustainability, stewardship, sanitation and pollution. Consequently we came up with the suggestion to empower communities through waste management.
Hill House Meeting proposes a community waste recycling facility at Achimota to:
- Recycling: Reducing waste and promoting eco-friendly practices.
- Composting: Turning organic waste into nutrient-rich soil.
- Job creation: Empowering the unemployed youth through sustainable initiatives.
- Model for waste management: Serve as a model for other communities.

Key Components
- Composting
- Waste sorting
- Biogas toilet
- Biogas generation
